At no time did I worry that we would be injured, but it sure was exciting. We did a 1/2 day canyoneering trip in Unnamed Canyon. Everyone in the family loved it (even those who had reservations about doing this type of trip). Hands down this adventure was the best part of our southwest slot canyon road trip. Can't say enough good things about our experience. By the way he frames pictures and looks at lighting, you can tell he has a serious interest in it. Eric was a great photographer for us too, stopping several times to take photos with my camera. Make sure to bring a backpack or two for a group, food, and lots of water (you can leave extra water jugs in his jeep between canyons so you don't have to carry it all the time). We saw a lizard and two snakes but in the cool slot canyons they are too cold to move (no worries). You could tell he was so interested and excited about taking us through several canyons that he kept up the pace during our full day trip. The vast, magical landscape of Anna Creek Painted Hills is a spectacular outcrop of otherworldly deep orange mountains that emerge from the flat desert landscape. Our family of six are aged 9 to 51, fairly fit, but still several steps behind our guide. Hidden in the South Australian Outback lies one of nature’s greatest and oldest masterpieces. The hiking to the top of the canyon is beautiful and warm followed by the cool shade of the narrow canyons we repelled into. Our guide drove us a half-hour from the Zion entrance to a set of picturesque slot canyons where we did not see another sole the entire day. Walking yourself down a steep canyon edge, back to the ground is an experience of a lifetime. We're planning on a return trip for another canyoneering adventure and will be using Red Desert Adventure again - and we'll be requesting Joe as our guide! Joe was was also very knowledgeable and entertaining with input on the local area. He also managed to get our party of 6 through the rapels more efficiently than a guide with another outfitter was managing with a party of 2. He also did a great job accommodating the physical limits of one of the folks in our party and still got us 3/4's of the way up the slot so that we had 6 rapels on the way back. Our guide Joe was exceptional! He was easy-going but serious about safety and did a great job instilling confidence in the 2 folks who had never rapelled. We were looking for multiple rappels and as much "bang for our hiking" as possible and Water Canyon definitely fit that bill. So how to you find a guide that can meet such a diverse groups' needs and expectations for a safe and fun time? You call Red Desert Adventure! We had an initial phone call with Eric about the various options given where we were staying, what everyone was looking for, what the weather would likely be at the time of our visit, etc. Red Desert Adventure: Best Adventure on our Trip to Zion - See 666 traveler reviews, 606 candid photos, and great deals for Springdale, UT, at Tripadvisor. We had a group of 6 - ages 21 to 60, 2 guys & 4 gals, 5 used to exercise and adventures and 1 not so much, 4 that had canyoneered before and 2 that hadn't. Take the leap, you will not regret it.We did a full day canyoneering adventure in Water Canyon. One of the great things about this outfitter is that they do not pair you up with other people, you have the undivided attention of the guide, which makes the cost especially reasonable. He adjusts the itinerary based on your skills (we had none), yet gives you confidence to make that first step. He is truly a mountain man that loves climbing and sharing that experience with others. To begin with, our guide 'Dan' was most courteous in evaluating our limitations and made us feel safe at all times. At first glance you may feel this is something outside of your comfort zone (that's the point), and yes it does take some physical strength, but my wife and I are either side of 60 and will remember this as a highlight of our vacation. But if you want to really have an adventure, look into a "Red Desert" one, you may never have this opportunity again. The trails at Zion are some of the best in our many national parks, every one exhibiting something different and spectacular. Don't just look at Zion National Park, experience it on the edge.
